April 10-15, 2026 is the 4th annual World Music Therapy Week (WMTW)! Established by the World Federation of Music Therapy in 2023, this year’s WMTW focus is on how music brings about connections. Trauma fundamentally disconnects people from themselves and others, and music is unique in its ability to simultaneously connect all parts of the brain. We have seen over and over again the power of music to change the lives of our students.
Each school year, by participating in music therapy interventions, our students learn how to understand and connect to their own emotions, sensations, thoughts and feelings as well as those of their peers and others they interact with at school and at home. Many of Sparks’ students begin the school year feeling shy, struggling to self-regulate, or knowing how to interact appropriately in the group. Through attending weekly sessions, the students gradually develop confidence to speak up, learn how to take turns or participate in the group’s tasks, and develop focus to achieve goals.
Additionally, music calms the amygdala, the center of the brain that causes the fight-or-flight response, so as students are listening to or playing music, they are increasingly able to engage socially and connect to others in the group. Music is also fun and can help them focus on something other than negative circumstances they may be facing.
By the end of the school year, we have seen Sparks for Success students even begin initiating group activities, encouraging other students to participate in the group, or helping their therapist, all leadership traits that they can continue to use throughout their time in school and beyond. As they realize they can successfully set and achieve goals, such as composing and performing a group song, they develop additional confidence to set and achieve even greater goals in the future. This helps them develop positive trajectory both in and out of school.
Your support of music therapy this World Music Therapy Week helps a child to make connections to themselves and others in powerfully transformative ways that can last a lifetime.
